I'm inclined to believe that Robertson has (conveniently) deluded himself into believing his own tripe about whom God favors or "smites" and why.   But he might, alternatively, be just another guy sort of drunk on his own power, wealth and influence. Maybe enough to have "made a deal with the Devil" without - consciously - recognizing that he was doing so.

"Satan," of course, can take many incarnate forms.   Fat cat corporate bigwigs, for example, aiding in the somewhat convenient though oxymoronic merging of socially conservative & religious populism with the interests of big multinational business and the military-industrial-energy complex.   Robertson would hardly be alone in falling for such a disguise.
