I really think the "Kill a Commie for Christ" stuff did start out as bitter irony, and was recognized as such by everyone except a handful of such people as Lighter refers to. Much the same as some people I know who saw the New Yorker cover, with the Obamas as terrorists, and said "They sure got that right".
