And for every war/etc where "religious issues are central" there is a war (usually the same one) where religion was a proxy for politics or something else. The Troubles, for instance, weren't about religion, they were about the UK having a toehold on the island. If both sides were mostly Catholic or mostly Protestant, it would still have been a bloody mess.

Political leaders who want to conquer each other have long used religious differences to motivate their troops (ancient Palestine, anybody?).

If you think none of the killing under the Soviets was done in the name of atheism, you've been fed a line of bull. Millions of priests, monks, nuns, and bishops, at the very least, were killed for being believers. By sweet, reasonable, world-improving atheists.
