In a cottage by the wood,
Little old man by the window stood
Saw a rabbit running by
Come knocking at his door
"Help me, help me, sir" he said
Or those men will shoot me dead.
"Come little rabbit, come with me
Happy we will be".
'"Help me, help me, sir" he said' seems to fit the meter.
Interestingly it was more than one hunter in this version.
