I heard tell that for a short period of time, MGM was having financial difficulties, so they temporarily laid of a bunch of their personnel--including the lion.

So for movies made during that fortunately short period, instead of the movie starting with the lion roaring, Sam Goldwin would come out and shrug his shoulders. . . .
