If you can only afford two "snow tires" and not a whole set of four (or five), put them on the drive axle (2-wheel drive vehicles only).

Never mix tires on a 4-wheel drive as it will damage transfer case and other driveline components. In most cases, it will cause danderous handing problems when the 4-wheel drive feature is engaged.
