Thanks for the information on AWD vs 4WD. (And John, especially thanks for the information about needing to chock all the tires!) I thought there was a difference but wasn't sure.
I've had true 4WD vehicles in the past. Now I have a Subaru. What I have been sure of is that it does not have the ground clearance to go off-road. Looks like this weekend will be my first chance to see what kind of difference AWD may make on snow-covered roads, compared to front-wheel drive.
