I like my 64-bit Windows 7, but I don't know if I'd upgrade from XP to Windows 7....or does your "modern laptop" have Vista? I've used Audacity for editing recordings with both Vista and Windows 7, and it has worked very well. I haven't used Cubase, so I don't know if the current version of Cubase will accept recordings from an older edition.
