Thread Name: BS: Kraft Foods to close Cadbury factory
Subject: RE: BS: Kraft Foods to close Cadbury factory
Before 1914 Frys was one of the largest employers in Bristol
By 1919 the company had merged with Cadbury's chocolate; the Fry's division began the move to Somerdale, Keynsham in 1923.
After 1981 the name Fry's was no longer in use at Somerdale, but the factory was still a major producer of Cadbury's products.

On 3 October 2007, Cadbury announced plans to close the Somerdale plant by 2010 with the loss of some 500 jobs in an effort to 'maintain competitiveness in a global marketplace' and to move production to a sister factory in Poland.

At the time the factory appeared to be profitable and it was suggested that a strong motivational factor was the high real estate value of the land as it was probable that the greenfield site would be re-classified for housing.

May I just observe that there was no outcry or crusade
then about the 500 workforce being 'worried sick' etc....

..... but then that was just the English stuffing the English
