Recovering the knowing one had during a lifetime is possible without dragging through the ashes. It tends to be obscured because (a) it is no longer brought forward by your present context and (b) it is associated with an identity other than your current physical identity and (c) the loss of a whole identity with all its connections and belongings can be traumatic enough to be blacked out to avoid re-experiencing loss. All these can be worked around on a gradual basis.
