Windows metafiles and advanced metafiles are raster images. The actual notation symbols are contained in a true type font file provided by noteworthy and installed in your computer when you install noteworthy. Thus the metafile contains information to place the lines - for the staves, notes and barlines and appropriate symbols from the font file. You have to have the font file installed on your computer for the metafile to display correctly as I found out when I went over to Linux.
