To update a little the notes by Barry Finn of blessed memory: The Government Center subway station still contains a (not very conspicuous) sign identifying its location as Scollay Square.

The Combat Zone has been done in by the expansion of Chinatown. Just today I had dim sum in an enormous Chinese restaurant that (I was told) had previously been a gay porno movie theater -- and before that, a legitimate theater. Some years ago, when that process had recently started, I wrote an Elegy for the Combat Zone:

Farewell, O street of sleaze,
For even sleaze must pass.
Rebuild, O virtuous Chinese,
That true blue Boston, Mass.,
Where men still used their powers,
And women used their wits,
And "topless" went with towers,
And "bottomless", with pits.
