As I recall (although it's a long time ago) the NT cast were all actors, but one of the band members might take a part if it required "on-stage"* singing or playing.

I lost patience with the TV series after the first two or three episodes.



* there wasn't actually a stage, it was a "promenade" performance with the actors and audience all sharing the same floor space.
