Like instead of such as, or, all of a sudden instead of suddenly. . .

I'm not sure what time frame you put on "geek speak", but "all of a sudden" is absolutely not just current language fad or fashion. "All of a sudden" was very common, in children's, teens', and adult talk when I went through the first two of those, seventy years ago.
