I didn't 'select' it from alternatives stating differently: which undermines your point that the ref must indicate if the kick can't be taken quickly, That has become the usage due to lazy neglect of the real rules. My point is that it is time for the perfectly clear rule to be properly enforced. Time that the concept of "Play to the whistle" were revived. Any decent ref wd have just brought ball back & made kick be taken again when defence ready for it. But the way he not only gave the kick, which dubious [was it a real back pass or just a deflection?], but put the ball down at the kick-taker's feet to help him on with taking it quickly [&, I repeat, illegally] shows which side he was on.
