Open Mike's complaint cannot be solved by copy and paste when scanning printed material or film records. One scans the image; the ads as well as the article/song; that can't be helped.

The online edition of NY Times has ads, but they offer a 'printable' copy of some articles, lacking the ads. After a time, however, the online material is removed and one must go to the original or film copy, ads and all.

I'm afraid one can do little except mouth (shhh, library!) a few expletives and empty the old pocketbook.
