I suppose this is as good a place as any to discuss the phrase "thanks in advance," which always seems silly, insincere, and slightly annoying. I guess you could call it a pet peeve of mine. The person seems to be telling me: "Don't expect to ever hear from me again, no matter how much work you might do for me." Instead of conveying that he appreciates my work, it conveys the exact opposite. "I can't be bothered to thank you later, so I'll just get it over with now." At best, it is a very insipid kind of thanks.

I am tempted, when I see the phrase "thanks in advance" to reply "you're welcome—in advance" and then not post any lyrics until maybe 13 years later!

But no, I don't really do this for the thanks (which should be obvious from the fact that I'm replying to a 13-year-old request). I mostly do it because I enjoy the challenge. Still, it's nice to be thanked—sincerely.
