And of course there actually was no "commercial market" during Mozart's time.   That appears to have changed with Beethoven--when a sizable middle-class market did in fact start to arise, especially with more pianos in homes.   A fascinating examination of this in Paul Johnson, The Birth of the Modern, an excellent--and very lively-- book on the period circa 1815-1830 in all its aspects.
