Thread Name: 1967 Album: The Rock Machine turns you on...
Subject: RE: The Rock Machine turns you on...
I didn't have the first 'Rock Machine', but played 'Rock Machine I Love You' to death: S&G, The Byrds, Leonard Cohen, Blood Sweat & Tears, Laura Nyro, Taj Mahal - my first proper experience of American rock. And there was that weird 'My name is Jack and I live in the back of the Greta Garbo Home for wayward boys and girls....' Disturbing.

Island had a good early sampler called 'Nice Enough to Eat' which managed to range from Dr. Strangely Strange to '21st Century Schizoid Man'. Free and Spooky Tooth were on it, but so too were folkier things like Fairport and Nick Drake. Didn't care much for Quintessence, though.
