I hope playing in different positions extends the life of the strings --- when I begin to notice the tarnish on the strings at the positions I normally play, I start wandering up the neck to play E, for example, at the fourth or seventh or even twelfth fret. If nothing else, it reinforces my knowledge of where things are on the fretboard.
