A "branded" debit card (i.e., one that has the Visa or Mastercard logo) is processed by/through that company, and the seller/vendor is hit with a service charge similar to the one charged for use of a credit card. I'm not sure if any bank does their own any more, other than the ones that are strictly for use in ATM machines.
