From a security point of view, running relatively recent software is much more important than having javascript switched off.

I would doubt this was malware, the crunched prefs file would have been a result of iCab ending unexpectedly. The problem that resulted in the crash is much more likely to be a result of relatively antiquated software which is probably laced with bugs that have been remove in more recent versions.
