Thread Name: Review: LOTHLORIEN MP3 CD is GREAT!!
Subject: RE: Review: LOTHLORIEN MP3 CD is GREAT!!
It is good stuff they do...and I mentioned in another thread (one about me, actually. That SSP, you know) that their CD was so popular on mp3.com that they had all the top five songs in the folk/celtic charts for several weeks running.

The trouble with mp3.com, from the listeners or folkie performers point of view, is that so much of the folk repertoire is actually copyrighted, and you can't post "cover" songs. So it's a mix of mostly well-worn standards (honestly, how many more renditions of "She Moved Through the Fair" does the world need?) which do very well, and original stuff which sounds like other well-known artists--those are the two categories that get lots of mp3.com hits--while really original stuff is harder to find. (It's there but, unsurprisingly I guess, is not in the top 40.) I'm hoping that were I to hear Lothlorien in concert, the Loreena McKennit influence would not be quite so evident. (Just as my own mp3.com site is not completely representative of what I actually perform--there's a huge chunk of my own repertoire that I can't post there--songs I picked up somewhere...)
The Ghostwood jig is quite original though and it was #1 for a few weeks, so this generalization is not always accurate.

Nicole has been very kind to me in regards to my mp3's so I hope she doesn't take this the wrong way. In fact I'd like to hear from you Nicole on the subject of how you promoted Lothlorien's mp3 site. Obviously, start with really good music, then what works?
