i remember seeing video of lava flow i think it was iceland where they shot water on it by fire hoses to cool and therefore direct or deflect the flow.

i was hoping to find a video, but could only find this Geological report. this shows that some effort can be made to interact with lava but that doesn't address the flooding due to lava heating glaciers.
