What you're suggesting sounds a bit like Ewan MaColl's Critics Group of the 1960s. We had a similar thing going at University when I was there and it was quite interesting - certainly more formal than a singaround but stimulating. Perhaps also it could be an occasion to play some field recordings and have a chat about the singer's style song choice, context etc.
