Tom Yates used to run a folk club in Disley, upstairs at the White Horse about 1974-5 for a few years. I used to go most weeks. One song I particularly remember was 'Johnny Mars The Knocker' about a knocker up man from Tom's youth in rochdale. I dont remember all the lyrics but some of them were "Johnny Mars the knocker, all his life a window tapper, every working morning in the hours before dawn. eileen, arise eileen it's a cold and frosty morning, the spinning room is spinning and school awaits the childer..." He recorded 2 or 3 LP's but I have not been able to track them down. He also ran a club at High Lane Conservative Club for a while after the White Horse club finished. Andy Waide
