If you can locate the hole put broken glass down into in and cover in with a piece of wood. Place a glass jar into a strong bag and break it up with a hammer until it's around fingernail size. Rats have arteries in their front feet and once cut cannot control the bleeding. I used this method twice and it seemed to have done the trick. Also place broken glass among some minced meat close to their exit/entry point.
