If they did they didn't pay an attention to the application of commonsense on that particular occasion and they paid the price for it. Responsibility and duty of those flying those helicopters was the safety and security of the forces they were protecting, they looked to that responsibility, no US forces were injured or killed. Armed insurgents amongst that party on that street corner intent on killing US forces however were killed.
