Thread Name: Kentucky mountain music box set - dates?
Subject: RE: Kentucky mountain music box set - dates?
From the very beginning when the label was setup and owned by Nick Perls and was almost entirely devoted to pre WW2 blues the Yazoo label or Belzona as it once was has never given discographical information. There is usually information on the performers where available and the notes usually were very informative on the chord structure, keys etc of the material issued which would be pickers probaby found very useful. For anyone seriously interested in discography most of this was available at the time in Dixon and Godrich's Blues & Gospel Records. As I pointed out above Tony Russell's book does the same job for old time country music. Personally I find the booklet enclosed in the Kentucky Box Set to be more than adequate and very nicely produced.I can think of hardly one issue on Yazoo from L-1001 onward that I would like to be without.
Without this label the knowledge of we who appreciate pre-war blues and old time music would be very much poorer. In my Book Shanachie and Rich Nevins continue doing an excellent job
Topic of course do an excellent job for British folk music but as the bulk of their material is from their own recordings and not from re-issues of commericial pre-war recordings, and as there is no readily available discography in the bookshops for ther material it is a completely different situation.
Incidentally for those not aware of other labels issuing old time country music I would recommend the excellent Old Hat label out of Raleigh North Carolina which does an excellent job in every respect including lavish booklets. County out of Floyd, Virginia is another.

I guess I should add that I have no commercial interest in any of these organisations, just an appreciation of what they have done to bring me a continuing enjoyment of some great music.
