I love when the sun shines on them and they glow the colors of the rainbow. They are incredibly beautiful creatures. I was watching them yesterday when they were not interested in biting. They were interested in making baby rainbows. The big female was making a nest with her tail, the smaller males would swim over and she would chase them away ... the big old bruiser came over and she chased him away also ... this just continues over and over again until she lays the eggs.   

This hole I fish in is a tiny stream that runs into lake Erie. The water at some places is only inches deep but they make it up to the big hole. Now this big hole is probably only 20 yards wide and 15 yards long with a small waterfall. It is maybe 8 ft deep with a sandy bottom and crystal clear.   I have literally stood at the top of the waterfall (maybe 4 feet drop to the water) and had them jump the falls right at my feet ... absolutely wonderful ... normally I will crouch down and lay a streamer fly at the shallow end and work it right up to the falls.   sometimes like the other day they hit, sometimes like yesterday they just want to make babies ...

It is a wonderful thing to be there in any case. They are God's masterpiece.   Now the big brown trout will follow them, they come up to eat the eggs ... those critters are really wiley ... very hard to catch. I nail them in the lake standing on the break wall but in the creek, very hard to get them to bite anything..
