It did become very popular in foreign mission circles, and the tune is sometimes called CHINA in recognition of its reputation as the favorite Christian song of that country.
I can remember (back ... some mumblety mumble years) ... All right ... about 55 years back ... being taught the chorus in Chinese, probably by a school scripture teacher (ex-missionary) rather than a Sunday School teacher or Youth Fellowship leader.
I can just remember that the "Chinese" (Mandarin / Cantonese / ???) sounded like:
"Zu Yesu niñe - or" (well, very approximately ... and I didn't take notes!)
