Murray, things like an artist's concert schedule tend to be very public and very accessible these days. I always travel legit but, even when presented with a valid work permit, immigration staff can ask a lot of hard questions. And you never know what they can see on the monitor in front of them.

Canada does not require a work permit for a musician who is performing concerts of a 'cultural' nature (a festival, or a dedicated traditional music venue), with a contract that states exactly that. Plain old bar gigs or house concerts aren't looked on so kindly, I believe.
