Now, I'll be the first to admit I don't get out much. I am not a shopper. I don't go into the stores unless I need something and then I only go for what I need. But yesterday I took my courage in hand and went shopping with my daughter for back to school clothes. I kinda had to, I had the checkbook and she's living with me now.
Anyway, while in Sears my eye was caught by a sign that said "FOLK-A-DELIC". I had to know more. I casually strolled over to check it out.
The shirts were colorful but not unusual to my eye. The blue jeans, however, were flared (or bell bottoms) and had colorful patches sewn all over them. There was a lavender shawl type garment which also sported patches and flowers. Flowers seemed to be a dominant theme.
So what gives? Has Sears mis-interpreted the folk music world for the lost age of the hippy? Am I being overly sensitive to pokes at folk music? Could they be referring to some other "folk" thing of which I remain unaware?
I guess part of my discomfort stems from the fact that I am tired of certain misconceptions in popular entertainment and I think that this is another. I know that any sitcom that wants to portray folk music will show a circle of people gathered around one guitar player all singing Kumbaya or Michael Row The Boat.
Or am I making a big deal out of nothing in particular? Should I go get a life?
