I happen to know that the gift to LH was a prized, nay, beloved possession of Eiseley's son. He parted with it with tears in his eyes but love in heart little heart because he thought that it would bring joy, a beam of sunshine, to someone trapped in the mud of Spring in Ontario. To denigrate such a selfless, kind, and loving gift is reprehensible to say the least. Ah, how sharper than a serpent's tooth is an ungrateful giftee.
