A question came up in another thread about whether the old African-Amercian spirituals by the Fisk Jubilee Singers and others are "gospel."

I think they are since they've been done so many times later by other groups. What do you think?

Also I was wondering if gospel music could be defined. I tend to think that is was perhaps started in the late 1800s (circa 1880) when revivalist hymnals by Bliss and others became popular.

It seems like the early 1920s with Vaughans (southern Gospel) and Gospel Pearls, 1921 (African-American gospel) that "Gospel" music as we know it really began.
