Sonnet 17/11/00                                CDLXXXI

I now regret I did not know you, when
That which you tell occurred. I cannot send
Comfort or caring to past. To open
My heart to you, that I might hope to mend
Some of your hurt, I must at least now try.
Yet, can I hope to share what you now feel,
Or just helpless stand, listening to you cry?
I have not knowledge to which fate I seal.

I cannot alter past, to comfort you
Or care while it did matter. Can I hold
You as a friend, and offer shoulder now?
I care, that you remember pain, and know
Such loss. I hope you do not think me bold,
To offer healing where I don't know how.
