Alice, I also have a songbook for children by Ruth Crawford Seeger. The co-op school where the songs were put in practice was in Silver Spring, MD, near my home. I was so pleased to see a dedication to Glenora Horne, one of the moms who helped make the music happen.Glenora's daughter was my roommate in college for a while, and my mother and Glenora became close friends. When I told her I was learning to play folk guitar (around 1966), she said, "that's lovely, dear. My sister and I used to play guitar and give folk music concerts [I think she said it was in the 20's, maybe not]. I have a dulcimer made by Howie Mitchell, he's a dear friend of mine." I had no idea.
Just a reminiscence. Probably doesn't belong here but what the hey.
Any discussion about folksongs in public schools today?
