...and when I said "big boom", that is most of what the decision makers knew. It was a BIG bomb, but we understood very little about radiation effects right then...it was viewed as a way to end the war.
(Hitler was already at the end of his rope, but invading mainland Japan was beyond scary).
   Those few who had some idea of the real power had painted themselves into a corner, and had very few options then. I suppose they could have pretended not to be able to make more soon enough, but someone would have spilled the truth...
