Sonnet 26/11/00                                CDXCI

I wake to find a cat at either side,
And at my head and feet. Are these the wards
That hold dreams spellbound? Do they help provide
Your power over me? I have no swords
To open circle: Thought of you has bound
With desire's chain, in catacomb of dreams.
Yet, I have forged these shackles: To have found
Muse of such power more than death redeems.
I sleep to find in dream escape from life,
That I might find my heart's desire, and reach
Out to this new-found light. I tire of strife:
Can muse to me some other lesson teach?
I have not right to ask muse for desires:
Nor can I hide what muse in me inspires.
