In years gone by when soccer players ( and in other sports too) when were selected to represent their Country they were awarded a special cap as a personal trophy to celebrate the occasion. They received one for each time they were selected and so if a player has represented his Country say 24 times they say he has 24 caps.

I don't think that they actually receive caps now but the saying has stuck.

I am not sure whether other than UK Countries do this. No doubt other members here will know.

Cricketers still receive caps and sweaters and of course many cricketers actually wear their caps and sweaters whilst playing.
