YOU PROB'LY ALREADY KNOW THIS, but just for the record:

A lot of songs are one octave do-to-do, with maybe just a couple of notes out of range. For example, the first note of You Are My Sunshine is SOL below the octave. You can fake it by using SOL within the octave, and the rest of the tune goes okay. A lot of pickups are like that.
