Re John Rae, Orcadian doctor and explorer, who went out to try and find what had happened to Franklin: his effigy lies in St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney. His life story has been chronicled by Ken McGoogan in his book "Fatal Passage", and unfortunately John Rae was totally discredited by Queen Victoria's government for daring to suggest that Franklin's party had had to resort to cannibalism - based on evidence brought to Rae by his Inuit co-explorers. And Rob Naylor there IS a fabulous song about John Rae, written by Edinburgh songwriter, Gill Bowman.
