This is the version I heard in the 1950's from my Scotish ancestors living in the Gaspe region of Quebec Canada.

Not last night but the night before
Three big tomcats came to my door
They knocked at the door and I let them in
I knocked them down with a rolling pin
...

There was more but I do not remember.

It is truly amazing how this rhyme circulated (and changed) through so many cultures and countries
- and all before the internet.
