Thread Name: New! Real Folk Discussion Blog
Subject: RE: New! Real Folk Discussion Blog
I think that a "real folk discussion" blog should include those who have some expertise
in the academic side of folk music, ethnomusicologists, folklorists, anthropologists or those who have had some field training in unearthing folk music.
Otherwise, it degenerates into a matter of opinion as to what folk music is.
Non-specialists tend to muddy the waters, so to speak.
Also, the parameters of which folk music is being discussed should prevail.
If it's folk music from the British Isles for example, then there are those who have an
expertise in identifying this music.
If it's folk music from all over the world, you're going to have problems.
The way out of this should be that the discussion should be moderated by a legitimate
authority in the respective folk music.
This could easily turn into a "what is folk" maelstrom without much illumination.
