In my opinion, there's no substitute for trial and error. What works on one guitar with one player won't necessarily work for you and your guitar. After many years of trying different brands I settled on D'Addarios, they seem to be consistently good, and- maybe I'm just a gentler player than I was- but I can't remember when I last broke a string.
