I Googled "washrag sale," and got the answer: the 1940s radio series "Vic & Sade" (no NPR in those days). Apparently, Sadie and her friend Ruth were enamored of the washrag sale at Yambleton's Department Store. Here's a link to buy CDs of ""Vic and Sade" although I, darned if I know which one contains the washrag episode(s). There's a phone number on the home page.
