Sonnet 02/12/00                        D

I hear the whisper of my muse, and write,
But dream about her smile. How can I please
This source of inspiration? Would the sight
Of her eyes bring me peace, or would they tease?
I think about her words, and try to form
An image in my mind. How can I tell
If she is touched by verse? Reply is warm,
But have I reached her heart, or just a shell?
I know the reasons that I should not care,
But follow still my heart. How can I hold
To what I must, and to my dreams be fair?
Must I hold back, and end alone and cold?
I question what might be, but do not dare
To ask if I should flee, or show I care.
