Others have mentioned the "Small Sad Sam" parody. As I recall, there was also a sequel to Big John (which apparently is properly called "Big Bad John", but will always be "Big John" to me.) It was sung by a woman, as I recall, and told how a woman - presumably the "Cajun Queen" of the original song - went down into the mine, found John, and revived him (presumably with a kiss.)
