I sleep with a can of pepper spray within easy reach. I have done so since my last year in my old apartment, when I was dealing with a crazy neighbor. Pepper spray is small, easily concealed, good at chasing creepa (and bears) away, without doing them serious harm. If you're going to try this, get yourself a can, and keep it handy.
