Sonnet 10/12/00                              DXII

I pray you sleep, sweet muse, that you might dream
Of heart's desire. Perhaps you will hear voice
To whisper that I care. Yet, would I seem
Too bold, to ask for more? I have not choice:
As muse, you hold my heart. I know you are
But mortal: Fate has given you the power
Over my dreams. You may be distant, far
From me, but still lend root, to let verse flower.
Still, I would see smile, and look into eyes,
To find out who you are. I seek to know
All that I might, so that I might be wise
In ways of winning muse, to help verse grow.
I seek to know you, mortal maid and muse,
Each aspect that can my heart's hopes refuse.
